A run to The Devil’s Jumps!
The Devil’s Jumps are five bronze age barrows next to the South Downs Way above Treyford. They are aligned with the midsummer setting sun, and are popular with local pagans, druids and runners searching for spiritual enlightenment and a round of applause as the sun sinks on the longest day.
Rumour has it that the devil was jumping from barrow to barrow and making such a hullaballoo that he disturbed Thor who was resting on nearby Treyford Hill. Grumpily, Thor threw a boulder at him, and the devil took off, vowing never to return…
This year the Milers return to The Devil’s Jumps for another of our famous ‘Solstice Runs’.
We’re planning three running routes to get there, and if running to the top of the Downs doesn’t appeal, you can instead join a walking group. Sunset is at 21:21.
Ok, here’s the plan:
Option 1: Running from The Grange (6.5 miles each way) leave at 20:00 sharp.
Option 2: Running from Flint Barn at Cocking (3.3 miles each way) be ready to run at 20:25.
Option 3: For runners and/or walkers, please meet at Didling near the church (1.5 miles each way) for a 20:30 start. What3Words location for the Didling meeting point is https://w3w.co/conductor.record.superhero
A few things to mention…
Probably obvious, but there will be a bit of standing around at the top of the South Downs waiting for the sun to set, please bring something warm to wear…
It will be dark on the way back, bring a head torch…
Some people drink beer or mead to toast the setting sun… Just saying 😃
